Introducing an FDA approved, safe, cost-effective solution to help reduce accidental needle sticks in the Dental Health Environment. Needle sticks and sharps injuries are a serious hazard in the dental office. Such injuries may expose the dental worker to a potentially grave, lethal risk. In approximately three seconds, the Sharps Terminator® destroys hypodermic needles. Eliminating the sharp at the point of procedure will significantly help reduce exposure to deadly blood borne pathogens caused by needle sticks to the many workers down the line in the hypodermic needle disposal process.
There is no substitution for caution when handling needles. Stop needle stick injuries at the point of procedure to help reduce exposure to the dangerous hazards of needle disposal.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that health-care workers sustain 385,000 needle stick and other sharps related injuries in hospital-based settings annually. This amounts to 1,000 sharps injuries daily.
Gathering data in private practice settings such as dental offices is impossible due to a lack of a surveillance system. But it is suspected that including injuries in this setting would raise the total to more than 500,000.
Several thousand needle stick injuries are reported each year in the US in the practice of Dental Medicine, many more going unreported and many involving possible exposure transmitted via sharps injuries during patient care include hepatitis B, hepatitis C, and HIV. The CDC also notes the risk includes herpes, malaria, and tuberculosis.
With the cost of testing and treatment now averaging in excess of $1,000 per incident, accidental needle sticks promise to be an unwanted drain on the practice of dental medicine. Even more troubling, these figures do not take into account the cost of litigation, OSHA violations, or the burden of long-term care which can be as high as $600,000 for a serious infection.
