Depending on volume, a monthly pickup will often cost less than weekly. Volume can significantly increase or decrease the per-box rate. On average, a small medical facility or practice will ship about 4-8 boxes a month—resulting in approximately $160 to $360 per month for medical-related waste disposal.

Medical sharps are not recyclable, but the containers are often cleaned and reused. Sharps containers from hospitals, medical facilities, dental offices, veterinary offices, and many health care related fields are usually sent to a medical waste disposal site where they're burned.

STUDY OF US HOSPITAL GROUPS AND SHARPS WASTE DISPOSAL
STUDY OF US HOSPITAL GROUPS AND SHARPS WASTE DISPOSAL
This study was performed by analyzing the sharps box disposal records of four separate hospital groups in the Midwestern region of the United States. The cost of sharps box disposal was pulled from vendor billing. Cost savings was derived from the followings assumptions:
- Purchase of one Sharps Terminator for each 15 hospital beds and use of the device on syringes.
- Sharps Terminators purchase price of $1,000 (inclusive of taxes and shipping) per device.
- Use of Sharps Terminator in approved fashion reduces sharps container waste by 70%.
- Savings do not include reduction in safety needle use or decrease in the number of accidental needle stick injuries experienced.
- Sharps boxes are billed based on volume and frequency.
- Two-year use period on the Sharps Terminator.

“The real argument used against safer needles in the UK is financial. Some safer needles do cost significantly more, but the range of safer needles and their different cost has not been properly understood by purchasers. There has also yet to be a rigorous Cost Benefit Analysis, because of the potential variables - the different risk situations, varying needle prices, costs of testing patients and exposed staff, record keeping, staff cover and replacement costs, compensation and ultimately the costs of treatment. Never mind the trauma that health workers suffer whilst waiting for their results or the pressure on home life that has fractured many a relationship. At the start of our campaign compensation for a “straightforward” downstream injury was around £1,000 ($1,600), it is now up to £3-5,000 ($4,800 - $8,000). The Doctor who developed a needle phobia after a needle stick got £465,000. How much compensation will a worker infected with HEP C or HIV receive?”
